Matty Hewitt- Pro(active) Surfer

Matt learnt to punt only a short time after learning to surf.

From the few times I’ve been around the current National Open Champ, I have figured a few things out about young Matt…

First of all, yeah it’s pretty obvious he rips the bag in the small stuff, nice carves, solid air arsenal and tube savvy.  As far as how he fairs when it gets bigger I have no idea as I havent seen him but I am keen to see if has ticker in waves of consequence.

Yip he landed it, couldnt be arsed putting seq up..

Secondly- Focus and Drive. Matt certainly doesnt lack either, he has a mission, he has set goals, he knows that he has to earn his sponsorship dollars thus he is proactive in everything he does, keeping in contact with sponsors, chasing photos and gaining results(in NZ). You only have to have a quick chat with Matt’s mum Michelle to know that she is right there with him making sure he ticks off all the boxes required of an aspiring sponsored surfer wanting to take it to the highest level. Many a kid has been burnt out by such lofty goals and expectations but from what I’ve seen I think he’s head strong enough to deal with the pressure…maybe.

Thirdly- He seems like a cool kid, polite, respectful and doesnt seem to have an inflated ego that sometimes goes hand-in-hand with surf stardom at a young age.
